Who's Who of Professional Women

KATHERINE BLALOCK

Katherine Blalock, MD, is a board-certified family medicine practitioner and clinical assistant professor of medicine at Texas A&M College of Medicine. Dr. Blalock’s interest in medicine began at an early age, when she found herself intrigued by visits to the doctor’s office and took an interest in how the doctors and nurses learned to do their jobs. Her parents recall that even as a young child, she would always answer that she wanted to be a physician when asked what she wanted to be when she grew up. As a teen, she had the opportunity to shadow several of the hometown physicians who had first sparked her interest in the profession, further cementing her interest.

In 2011, Dr. Blalock achieved her childhood dream and completed her Doctor of Medicine at the Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine. While she loved that medicine allowed her to combine science, research, and solving complex puzzles, she was most drawn to the opportunities that it presented to make connections with her patients, leading her to specialize in family medicine. An expert in pediatric, geriatric, and inpatient adult medicine, Dr. Blalock is certified by the American Board of Family Physicians and a fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

In addition to seeing patients in private practice, Dr. Blalock joined the faculty of Texas A&M College of Medicine in 2016 as a clinical assistant professor. Currently, she supervises nursing home rounds with medical residents three days a week while continuing to serve her own patients with a focus on preventive medicine. She emphasizes the urgency of geriatric medicine and training skilled providers to work in often-underserved long-term care facilities, and is proud to share her expertise in geriatrics with the next generation of physicians. In 2020, Dr. Blalock was named family medicine preceptor for the AIM program at Texas A&M College of Medicine, and she looks forward to increasing her teaching presence in the next several years.

In recognition of her compassion and attention to detail, Dr. Blalock was designated as a Texas Rising Star Physician in 2020 and has been named Best Family Medicine Provider in Grimes County, Texas, each year since 2016. She attributes her success to the collaboration and support of her clinic team and to being able to practice in her hometown, and plans to continue her work for as long as she is able. Dr. Blalock’s philosophy is to simply take everything one day at a time and to “start each day with a prayer,” and she thrives on the variety of cases and patients inherent in practicing family medicine.

Deeply involved in community service, Dr. Blalock served on the board of directors of Health For All, a free health care clinic offering preventive and specialist services to low-income patients in the Brazos County region, for more than six years. In her personal time, Dr. Blalock enjoys playing flute and piano, and is an active member of her faith community, directing and performing in her church’s choir. She is a member of the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association and the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
