Dr. Mi Lu is a registered professional engineer, who specializes in educating students at Texas A&M University. In 1987, she joined the faculty at the university as an assistant professor. Through the years, she has moved into roles of an associate professor and professor. At the university, she focuses on training students in computer engineering. Dr. Lu’s research interests include parallel computer, distributed processing, computer architectures, computer networks, computer arithmetic, computational geometry and VLSI algorithms.
Dr. Lu became involved in her profession because she came from an engineering family; her father and mother are also both in engineering. One is into hydo-electronic power, which is a very prestigious service. They designed many important projects that are still in use today. Thus, from childhood, Dr. Lu was fascinated with engineering. The second reason is that she was good in mathematics, which made it easy to get into the area of engineering because you have to have a good mathematics and science background. In addition, she chose her career because she wanted to be useful to others.
In addition to her career, Dr. Lu has served as the conference chairman of the International Conference of Computer Science and Informatics, which was a major highlight of her career. She recalls standing at the platform and looking down at the audience, which consisted of people from around the world. She felt the honor and dignity for the professional leadership, for the recognition as research pioneer, for the entrusted mission of technology innovation, and knowledge advancing and experience dissemination. Dr. Lu is also a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. To prepare for this career, she earned a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Rice University in 1984. She later earned a DEng in electrical engineering from the same institution in 1987.
Moving forward, Dr. Lu sees herself getting more involved in advanced projects, and more involved in research with her colleagues and graduate students. She aspires to leave a legacy as someone with findings in computer science, design and different applications of computer technology. In general, she would like to lead a new development to contributions and success. Dr. Lu attributes her success to hard work, and dedication to her job with all her efforts and time.
