As a lifelong music educator, Patricia Thornton Hayes gained a passion for music when she was a little girl. She began playing the piano between the ages of 3 and 4 after watching her older sister play. She recalls being put in another room while her sister practiced, and she was forbidden from entering the room and interrupting. When her sister had finished her lesson, Ms. Hayes would enter the room and play exactly what she had heard her sister play. In doing so, she had demonstrated a fantastic ability to play by ear, a talent that few musicians have. BERNICE L. FRAZIER

Inspired by the example of her mother, Bernice L. Frazier was encouraged to pursue a career in community service, culminating in her current work as the president and chief executive officer of the Southern Christian Leadership Foundation, Inc. An experienced executive with considerable expertise in nonprofit organization management, philanthropy, policy analysis, volunteer management and more, she gained valuable expertise in the field as the vice president of L&B Enterprises between 1996 and 2011. Moreover, Ms. Frazier is certified as a grant writer. Having always loved teaching, Nancy E. Dewey would teach her stuffed animals as a young child. When she attended school, she realized just how important education was. Her first job was as a science laboratory technician, but when she got married, she figured that science lab work was not conducive to her children’s lifestyle. Therefore, she decided to go back to teaching and has been for 20 years. Ms. Dewey is most proud of the accomplishments and progress that her students have made throughout the years. Marion Somers

MARION SOMERS

Dr. Marion Somers is renowned as a geriatric care expert with more than 50 years of excellence in her field. She has earned a Bachelor of Arts, with honors, from the City College of New York and a Master of Science in recreational therapy from Lehman College. Dr. Somers subsequently obtained a PhD in human and organizational development from the Fielding Graduate University in Santa Barbara, California. Dr. Somers’ passion for education has been her driving force while constantly finding workarounds to compensate for her being born with dyslexia. Notably, Dr. Somers’ work includes assistive devices for improving medical outcomes and quality of life in the aging population, and advocacy work for the families and caregivers of seniors.
