Barnum Collection at the Bridgeport Public Library, Ethel “Sue” Susan Palmer is an accomplished professional and a staunch advocate for equality and women’s rights. While she knew that she wanted to be a librarian from a young age, she faced a large amount of adversity and gender-based discrimination from the start and was never truly encouraged in her pursuit of her chosen field. Born in Serbia, Larisa Mathur, MBA, began her studies at the University of Belgrade, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in industrial engineering in 2003. Coming to the United States in order to pursue a career, she went on to complete a Master of Business Administration from the University of New Haven in Connecticut in 2005. She began her career in 2007 as a web analytics manager with Staples, Inc. in Framingham, Massachusetts, before a move to Florida brought her to Chico’s FAS, Inc. as a personalization manager for web analytics from 2010 to 2013. Carol Eshleman began her career in the hospitality industry after completing a Bachelor of Science in hotel and restaurant management, with a minor in business, at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1983 following four years of study. An accomplished violinist, music educator and horse breeder and trainer, Lisa Ann DeNuzzo has had a long-lasting love of music. While she initially began attending college for pre-law, she realized that she couldn’t live without music and transferred to Baldwin Wallace University, where she earned a Bachelor of Music in violin performance in 1983. During this time, she was introduced to horseback riding through a course she took to fill her physical education requirement and fell in love with the sport. Subsequently, Ms. DeNuzzo joined the College of Saint Rose and achieved a Master of Education in music pedagogy in 1985, followed by a certificate of qualification as a school administrator and supervisor in the state of New York. Feeling that her profession chose her, Dr. Maitai P. Gordwin, MBA, began her career as a call center agent with PFSweb in 1999 while studying at the Art Institute of Dallas. Earning an Associate of Applied Arts in fashion design in 2001, she made the choice to stay with PFSweb, rising to become a CCC senior supervisor as she continued her education at Texas Woman’s University, where she completed a Bachelor of Arts in fashion design in 2005. Born to a Jewish family in Ukraine, Marina Genel came to the United States at the age of 17 and began her career in the cosmetics and beauty industry after obtaining a license from the Concord Institute. For 25 years, Ms. Genel served as a spa manager and skin care consultant in Monmouth County, New Jersey, eventually opening her own spa.
